The Da Vinci Code

Of course, I went to see The Da Vinci Code tonight, very good movie, kind of reminded me of National Treasure in a way. I love Tom Hanks (He rocks a mullet, heh), and the supporting actors were pretty top notch as well. The dialogue was a tad bit weak at times, but overall the movie was very enjoyable. I haven't read the book, as I wanted to see the movie without any bias.
I was a little pissed off going into the movie, however. I was appalled to see about fifteen young people near the theater picketing and protesting the Da Vinci Code. I had already been on a rant earlier today about how some people seem to wrap themselves up so much in dogma that there is no room for logic and reason. When seeing these poor kids carrying "Jesus is Lord" and "Jesus wasn't just a teacher!!" signs, I wanted to punch them in the face at first…then I just felt sorry for them. A friend of mine said that it was brave and commendable for them to be standing up for thier beliefs. I disagree. I've been in these prayer marches and such, and generally it's one "brave" kid, and the rest who want to validate themselves, impress thier friends or get some more holy notches in thier belts. Bravery has nothing to do with it.
I wonder how it happens to slip past the sharp minds of these faithful followers that The Da Vinci Code was a fictional novel? FICTION means a made up story. The movie was based on a made up story. The very idea that there was controversy surrounding this this is utterly absurd. Yes, some sects have believed that Jesus may have procreated, and Dan Brown did build on that theory. However, there are no historical findings that would point to The Da Vinci Code being a truthful representation of historical accuracy. To consider it so, in either a negative or a positive light…is in a word…idiotic.
It is irritating to think that hundreds of movies can be released, portraying rape, murder, theft and all sorts of unsavory things without the religious right so much as batting an eye. However, release a movie based on a novel that portrays Jesus as having a child….and all hell breaks loose. If your faith is so weak that a novel shakes the foundations, maybe your faith is misplaced.
*sigh*
