Loyalty…I don't understand it. I mean, I can understand parents being loyal to children and vice versa, but that is about it. I really do not understand people being loyal to others who walk all over them, who are seriously fucked up or whom they don't even like. When I was going through the most seriously screwed up phase in my life, some people were very loyal to me, even my boyfriend (now husband), whom I severely f'd over in the process. Was I grateful? Of course. Did I deserve it or expect it? Hell no. I would have completely kicked my sorry ass to the curb if I had been in his shoes.
Furthermore, I really cannot fathom why people let family members treat them like shit and still have this misplaced loyalty to them "because they are family". Fuck that. If someone treats you badly, if you would not choose that person as a friend without the ties of "blood", then why would you allow "blood" to dictate the relationship?
I think that there has to be some basis to loyalty…just like trust that has to be earned. Parents that give 18 years to raising children to the best of their ability have earned the loyalty of their children. Friends who give of thier time and listening ears to others deserve the loyalty of their friends. Family members who choose to not take advantage of their family should have the loyalty of their family…
