HPV Vaccine Raises Debate
June 9, 2006 :: General, Thoughts ::
I am all about education people about the dangers of STDs, especially the ones people might not know about. Nothing is ever gained from ignorance, which is why I was glad to see the recent HPV awareness commercial on television. This week it was announced that they have developed a vaccine for the dangerous strains of HPV that can cause cervical cancer. I think it would be a good idea for ALL women to get vaccinated, because of the amount of people that currently carry this virus, and may not even know it. This vaccine is going to save thousands of lives.
Of course, with every good thing, especially pertaining to anything sexual, there is going to be some fucking nutjobs that want to cause problems. Certain conservative groups are up in arms about the idea of administering the vaccine to younger girls. The reason? They are afraid that this will encourage or "license" these girls to have pre-marital sex. As argued in Sex Drive Daily , the parents decide against vaccinating their daughters for HPV have to guarantee that they will not be raped by an HPV carrier, that they will never have a moment of weakness or choose to "rebel" and have sex before marriage, and that their spouse will have never had other sexual partners and will never have an extra-marital affair. In my opinion, there are too many variables to risk not vaccinating every female that reaches puberty. Taking it a step further, I would recommend vaccinating all girls who are junior high age.
This is a vaccine against a potentially life-threatening virus…a cancer vaccine. Let's not allow ignorance to cloud our judgement.
