Fuck Vista

January 26, 2007 :: General ::

It’s official.

I hate Windows Vista.

Granted, I haven’t actually used the OS yet, but I’m making walkthroughs for the knowledge base of the department I supervise, so that when we start getting calls, we will be at least half way prepared. I’ve been trying to get the office to purchase a copy of the software to install on a system so we could have some hands-on training, but that has not happened.

Instead, I am making knowledge base articles from online screenshots, which is a pain in the ass, because you do not always have the screenshots you need, or access to the information you need.

As a result, my walkthroughs are going to be tentatively accurate.

So far, I’ve found that even though the Control Panel of Vista is similar to XP, a lot of the actual interface is not.

For instance, you do not have immediate access to a Run box via the Start Menu. You either have to modify the configuration of the Start Menu, or hold down the Windows Key and press “R”. Either option is going to be great to walk people through over the phone!!

Another nice feature is the lack of a checkbox at the end of creating a new dialup connection, allowing you to create a shortcut on the desktop to the new connection. What is this, Windows 98? C’mon Microsoft! Don’t take away the things that make the ISP tech’s life easier!

There are 2 TCP/IP versions in Vista (4 and 6), which hopefully will not cause a conflict on older machines.

Well, back to making these damned walkthroughs.

Bleh.
