Or so the religious right would have you think. So much so, that they have determined to "take America back", one election at a time.
I have issues with anyone making legislative decisions based on religious belief. Of course, most Fundamentalists that I know feel that you cannot have morality apart from religion and whichever sect they choose.
If we allow the religious right to turn this country into something it was never intended to be, a theocracy or sorts, we will no longer be a free country. Freedom is what makes this country what it is.
However, all over the news, all over the web…we see that many of our freedoms are being infringed upon in the name of God. From getting a sculpture of a chocolate Jesus banned, to implementing a Bible class in a public school, the chilling tentacles of close minded religiosity is infiltrating our country like never before. They have the president on their side, they have influence like never before.
We need to stand up, and speak out.
We can't let them win.

I still feel that this nation was built upon religion as the foundation, and if we chip that away, then we lose our foundation and tumble. Already, we see ourselves without unity. This “freedom” where whoever does whatever, in some bleak gray neutral ground where no one can do anything, because we’re “free” (but can’t express our religious views one way or another), leads to promotion of the soul-latching, life-depleting NON-values that are permeating our society daily. Instead of focusing on positive goals, we’re letting ourselves and our society degrade into pointlessness and shiftyness with no real aspirations or goals besides our next “high”.
As far as “morality without religion”, I honestly have yet to see a good example of this, but it is important to put forward that it could definitely be a relative point of view.
To me, morality is abstaining from engaging in activities that cause harm, especially physical, to others. I adhere to this policy very strictly. I do not go out of my way to harm others, I avoid situations where I might do so. Theft, murder, assault, fraud, reckless endangerment, these are all things that violate the person or property of others. I have this morality without any hint of religiosity. I now know a good majority of people with similar ideas and values, and I find it to be refreshing.
I prefer that people choose to be moral based on the logical conclusion that we should do nothing that harms others…not based on a religion that has so many contradictions, gray areas and fallacies that it’s impossible to separate morals from dogma.
I like this definition of humanism, it mirrors my thoughts on this subject perfectly.
“[humanism is] a progressive lifestance that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment, aspiring to humanity’s greater good”
