Glory

Last night I attended a Christian concert of a band my boss knows well. I've been to dozens of Christian concerts, so it wasn't anything new or unexpected.
What I didn't expect was that I would get angry enough to walk out on a portion of the show.
If you have ever been to any type of Christian event, you are familiar with the canned sermons that are delivered about halfway through the show. It's usually something to do with the tough times the singer has been through and how god helped them, etc. I expected such a sermons last night, but what the singer said angered, irritated and saddened me.
The singer told the audience that he had been through tough times in the recent years, caused by his young son having diabetes, his father dying and his brother-in-law being killed in an accident. Of course, he went on to say that everything happens for a reason, and that god was always a comfort, and so on. However, he also went on to say that god allows bad things to happen, so that he will get more glory in the big picture.
Let's look at this for a second.
I can see saying that bad things happen for a reason, but saying that things like people dying or being ill only happen because god wants more glory?! If that's the case, god would appear to be an egotistical maniac, making people suffer so that he will get more worship and glory in the bigger picture. If a person truly believed that, how could the follow such a religion?
The saddest part was, the entire audience ate up every word, cheering and clapping.
Am I missing something, or has the world gone mad?
