My friend and I drove to Memphis this week to see the Final Riot Tour, with Paramore, Jack’s
Mannequin, Phantom Planet and Paper Route. We picked up another friend in Jonesboro, then headed out to Memphis.
We arrived after the gates opened, and rode the tram across the river to Mud Island. It was really a beautiful evening, not too hot with a decent breeze. Perfect for a night of music!
I wasn’t familiar with any of the bands except Paramore, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I was actually pleasantly surprised by all of the bands.
Paper Route opened, getting the crowd revved up and ready for the next bands. Mixing indie rock with a little electronica, these Nashville boys did a pretty good job of opening the show.
Next up was Phantom Planet. This band was greeted with shouts and cheers, along with a few fans yelling at them to do “The OC Song!!”. Having never even seen an episode of the OC, I felt a little left out during that portion of the show, but the set was pretty good nonetheless. Feel good, upbeat
rock, it was almost impossible not to at least nod along to some of the songs! Plus, they had the whole venue doing “The Wave”, so how could you go wrong? :)
My friend and I left at the end of Phantom Planet’s set to go meet them and get autographs, which took FOREVER, because the band never came to the merch table we (and several dozen other fans) expected them to. Once we gave up and headed back to our seats, we ran into the band by the ticket gates, and had a chance to meet them and get a few pictures.
We missed part of Jack’s Mannequin’s set, but the few songs I got to see were alright. The music
wasn’t really my type, but I have to say, I like the fact that the lead singer played a grand piano, and seemed to have a TON of energy during the set.
Finally, Paramore took the stage, amidst screams of a couple thousand teenage girls. The sound was really quite good for an outdoor venue, and Haley, the lead singer of Paramore, had really good vocals
for a live show. Paramore’s set was quite long, including all the hits from both their records, including a couple slower songs which I didn’t expect to be played.
Overall, it was really an enjoyable concert. I will have even more pictures available over the next week, hopefully.
I love you Memphis!
